2010.03.14 -- something about "When"

Do you still forget yourself in the song I showed you yesterday? One sentence that is not hard to understand is 想(xiǎng)你(nǐ)的(de)时(shí)候(hòu) (when missing you) .

So until now we have met two different ways to use “when”

  • As a question word: we say 什(shén)么(me)时(shí)候(hòu)
    e.g.when do you have time?
    你(nǐ)什(shén)么(me)时(shí)候(hòu)有(yǒu)空(kōng)?

  • As a conjunction: we say (当(dāng))…的(de)时(shí)候(hòu), when the subject of the sentence is omitted 当(dāng) could also be dropped.
     e.g when I was a child
     当(dāng)我(wǒ)是(shì)个(gè)孩(hái)子(zi)的(de)时(shí)候(hòu)
