朋(péng)友(yǒu) is what is friend in Chinese, for good friend we say 好(hǎo)朋(péng)友(yǒu).
Here I want to show you an old but very commonly used word for the very close friend(intimate friend; bosom friend;Confidant), it is 知(zhī)己(jǐ).
(知(zhī) is the shortcut for 知(zhī)道 (dào) =know, 己(jǐ) is the shortcut for 自(zì)己 (jǐ) = myself)
This word is only used for the person that you are really trust, the one has the same faith as you . you will sharing your opinions, your feelings with each other.
You will have lots of friends, but 知(zhī)己(jǐ), maybe you only have one or none.
To make it further, usually we call a male 知(zhī)己(jǐ) as 蓝(lán)颜(yán)知(zhī)己(jǐ), while the female 知(zhī)己(jǐ) use 红(hóng)颜(yán)知(zhī)己(jǐ).
(蓝(lán) = blue, 红(hóng) = red, 颜(yán) is the shortcut for颜(yán)色(sè), means color)
